If you would, then would'nt that mean that it matters what people think of you? Why would you clean it up if you did not care what they thought of you? If the place has been decent enough for you for the past few hours or days or however long it has been messy....
The messy house is just an example, I just want to know what people say to this.

It's not just about what people think of you it is what you think of yourself. Am I the kind of person who would make company sit in a messy environment. I want people to respect me and I also respect them which is why I would make sure my house will be clean for visitors.

I may not dress to impress but I do care how my house looks. I am sick as all hell and had people come to visit Sunday and STILL cleaned. Mostly it's not as much as I care what they think of my home as I've worked hard on it and am very proud of it.

I don't think straightening up has anything to do with how you think of yourself, rather, how much respect you are willing to give your company. It wouldn't be respectful to give your boss a cup of ramen for dinner, thats why you make a nice dinner, get out the "nice" china and such, because of the respect for your boss.

Sometimes we do things for people just to be polite, not to manage what they think of you. If you invite someone over, then tidying up is a sign of respect and kindness.

Yes I would. I have 3 kids and if someone was coming over I wouldn't want my kids stuff all over and then my company having to step all over it.

Of Coarse!

It's one thing to let go on your own, but there is no reason to invite/allow other people into your own mess.

That could just be uncomfortable to everyone!
