Nice question. The reason no-one is answering you is because you've only answered one qeustion yourself, and no-one wants to contribute time to what is possibly a lost cause.
Wifi uses a special data encryption for secure data communication, and some of that is retained after outgoing data leaves the router, so instructions to the AE to be sent to the printer may be misinterpreted due to this residual wifi waste, just like the bulldust collected during the chinese whispers game. I'd suggest having your local PC hardware mod shop attach a data cleaner port attachment to the cable between your router and your AE. It may be hard to find one of these, and theyre relatively expensive (for something the size of a thumb drive) due to their custom built design, but it should solve your problem permanently.

Good luck.

plug in with a network cable attached. The Light will flash - green - yellow - flashing yellow - then green again.
load AirPort Admin Utility. AirPort Assistant will not reliably work with Windows XP
The Base station should appear. Select the base station, press configure
enter the password (default is guest). If the password is not available, then press and hold the rest button for 15 seconds to rest to the factory default settings and restart from #1.
AirPort tab:
leave then name unchanged
enter a password
wireless mode - join existing wireless network (wireless client)
enter your network name (obtained from your router)
wireless security - 128-bit WEP
enter a password, exactly 13 characters for 128-bit WEP
