So the pizza deliveryman can hold it better when he is greeted by a blonde at the door, which will segue into the proverbial porn setting that we all love to watch.

Extra space can be used for cheese and red pepper packets.
Also, some pizzas are square, now, probably because they wanted to fill the box.
Originally, they weren't called pizza boxes, but halibut boxes. Of course they woudn't make the boxes hallibut shaped (that would just be silly). So they instead made the boxes square and flat, giving plenty of room for the halibut, and for little packets of cheese and red peppers.
There was one flaw in their plan - few people want to order halibut to go, even if it's delivered in 30 minutes or less. What to do with all those halibut boxes? What else is flat and fits in a 12"x12" square box? And what will we do with all these little packets of cheese and red peppers? The rest, as they say, is history.

So we can get the pizza in and out of it easily. Wouldn't it be a pain to try to life a slice from the edge of a round box?? And they're flat when unfolded, so it's easy to store them.
