Newspapers don't have influence as great as they once had in either social, economic or political spheres. With competing media there has been a diminution of influence. However, so long as there are still newspaper readers, they will be of some influence on readers. Politically it is probably still the most noticeable, which is why some newspapers seem to be extending their editorial pages to the news columns rather than leaving all the news fit to print speak for itself. Socially, newspapers can't compete with television or the Internet. From an economic standpoint, newspaper still provide the major source of news about business, the stock market and other economic news, such as indexes out of Washington, etc. Put the print media is slowly fading from the scene, fighting hard to hold on to its ever deteriorating base of readers.

The news whether it be through newspapers or other means is just a way of spreading propoganda or fear. The only way news helps a society is if it focused on good news not always the bad. I am not saying to sheild the public from the bad news but do not glorify it. What is even worse is when news is used for political gain. The TV or newspapers that have a political bias behind their stories.

hmm, good question! The answer varies on the demographic of the population particular to an area that you're interested in. For instance, many upper class neighborhoods might have hundreds subscribers to The Wall Street journal, while some to several middleclass homes subscribing to "town-papers". Newspapers have the power to influence through their perspectives on stories, famous people, and political people as well. The power a newspaper may have over it's subscribers is quite substancial when you consider that the views held by the owners and cheif editors of certain papers fit into the particular views of its subscribers and thus can sound out-right biased to certain people who have different political agendas. (like a conservative paper versus a liberal paper on their particular views of the Bush administration involved with economics.) The economic drive and results of the paper can be seen either locally or nationally depending on the nature of the newspaper being discussed. The san jose mercury news for instance has an impact on the exposure of cars, goods, and real estate for sale. Along with those, it also has job listings that directly effect the businesses who purchase adverstising space for the purpose of seeking labor. Converse to this, newspapers gain revenue from subscription fees as well as from the sale of advertisement space. These variables can affect how many people purchase the paper (offering the right price for the subscription fees) how many different businesses are effected from the paper (in terms of revenue directly related to listings they solicited to the newspaper), and which types of businesses are interested in which particular paper (depends on the demographic that a particluar paper is for.)

besides information, i suppose that causes for the newspaper include: a daily updated peice of refrence for news, employment, and sales listings. It can also serve as a means for coupons and other marketing tools as well as entertainment.

Newspaper shouldn't be highly censored, but the problem is when it comes to social and politcal, it tends to want to shape social and cultural thinkings. When it comes to economic status of a country, newspapers are highly censored and in most cases newspaper businesses tend to be hurt and ultimately controlled by the government.
