Hi
The muffler is to deaden the noise of the engine , they have a packing or plates through which the sound must travel.
Next time you want to replace an exhaust , knock a hole in the muffler and hear the difference.....have fun!

Mufflers 'muffle' the sound coming from the engine from the exaust pipe. They are wider than the pipe because that is how it absorbs the sound. I don't know how that absorbs the sound but it does.

They muffle. They have to be larger than the surrounding pipe because they house a series of chambers in which the exhaust nois from the engine resonates on and is deadened.

To deaden the sound. They are configured to cause the "sound" of the exhaust to travel down, then back, then back down again and etc. until when it finally comes out the end there is little "noise" left.
