"The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain." -coined by Alan Jay Lerner for My Fair Lady (1956). A sentence that was used to teach a student to pronounce English correctly

Note the correct spelling of plain, which is, in this case, a flat expanse of land, verses plane which is either a tree, a tool, to make something smooth or even, or it also can be a shortened term for a flying machine,

Since we are not really talking about the rain falling, but rather "staying" the proper question would be, "Where does the remainder of the rain stay."

The answer is that it either drains through the earth, evaporates, or runs down into a stream, lake, river, etc. Most times it is on the move, so for the most part, with small exceptions, it does not stay anywhere.

It's a wrong question: the rain in Spain doesn't fall mainly on the plane: it STAYS mainly on the plane. The rain falls everywhere.

Actually, most of it falls in northwestern Spain, Galacia, not on the cenral plain.

Of couse the Canary Island, La Gomera, gets a good portion of rain too. There's a great "mist forest" on that island.

I thought it fell on the PLAIN. If that is the case then the rest would fall in forests and cities.
