GPA is the average grade for your classes, generally ranked as such:

A= 4.0-3-8

B+ 3.7-3.4

B 3.4 - 3.1

B- 3.1- 2.9

C+ 2.8-2.5

C 2.4- 2.0

D 2.0-1.5

Failing: Not being able to get credit for a course taken:

Below a 1.5

This is general: Some colleges range is different:

GPA is typically calculated on a four point scale, going from 0.0 to 4.0, 0 being failure in all classes, and 4.0 being highest honors in all classes.

Usually, an F is 0.0, D is 1.0, C is 2.0, B is 3.0, and an A is 4.0. Basically, if you take into consideration all classes according to this scale, you will come out with a number between 0 and 4. So lets say you got one A, one B, and one C. Your grade point average would be (4.0+3.0+2.0)/3 = 3.0. You may also call this a "B grade point average". If one class is "weighted" more work than another, the calculation is different, however.

Typically, a GPA between 3 and 4 is good, although it matters what school you go to. Often, a 3 average at an excellent school is consideded better than a 4 average at a mediocre school.

Hope this helps!

A four point GPA used to be the best, represent in A grades in all classes. The Average part of the number comes from assigning a point value to the grades (4=A, 3=B, 2=C, etc) and taking the average for all courses/semester.

With respect to High School, the Advanced Placement (AP) classes have added another dynamic to that average. AP classes are more heavily weighted, with their grade being worth an addtional point towards that course's points. An AP 'A' grade is worth 5 points.

Since not all courses are available as an AP, a 5.0 is not possible. But a student in 4 AP courses with 2 other courses (i.e. Phys-ed or Home ec) could have a GPA of 4.66 (28/6).

At my institution for higher learning we go by a 4.0 GPA. A GPA of at least 2.0 is good but not necessarily ideal. Below a 2.0 GPA and you are not eligible for financial aid. Jose

a 4.0 is like an A average. An A is 4 pts, a B 3pts, C 2 pts, D 1 and F 0. Advanced classes give an extra point (ex. A= 5 pts, B= 4 pts, etc..)

4.0 is the highest you can have at most institutions (A perfect A average). So anything less than a 4.0 and you just aren't trying hard enough. (3.5 is decent it's a B+)
