Wallmart and Safeway both have souvenir sections and are cheaper than the gift shops. Many such options in Juneau, Anchorage and Fairbanks.

10 years ago, if you wanted real native art, the Alaskan Native Medical Center in Anchorage offered patient's families the option of displaying crafts for sale in the gift shop. Real. Cheap, Nice. But now it has been discovered and is still nice, real stuff, it isn't so cheap anymore.

In a bush town, I've been offered ivory carvings by drunks who wanted to get drunker. But it wasn't very well done work and I didn't want to be an enabler. So I passed.

I've been told the best place is Wal-Mart! Seriously. Not sure where it is, but I would assume Anchorage. I was informed by an acquaintance of my husband that's the best place to find a variety and cheap. The man lives there part of the year and does tours.
