Well, a few reasons.
1) You can always find someone fatter than yourself to pick on (unless you're one of these people in the tabloids who have to be lifted by crane from their living rooms).
2) It's the only prejudice that's still socially acceptable - it's wrong to make fun of people of other races, religions, or the disabled, but fat people can and should change to protect their health, so they seem like fair game.
3) Being overweight is seen as a personality flaw and a personal failing. No matter how inappropriate the comments, people will tend to agree with the sentiment.
I am an obese person. I can play Santa Claus simply by putting on a red suit.
When someone makes a comment on my weight, I laugh, and then I joke with him/her about what a crass, thoughtless, and moronic comment that was. I laugh at their ability to openly discuss with me something that is none of their damned business. I give 'em a big hug and tell 'em how glad I am that we're close enough friends to tell each other what we really think about each other's faults (I don't, of course, because that would put me on their level, but we both know from then on that I have that little ace in the hole, should I choose to use it ;-)

Because due to Barbie, TeenVogue and the worlds skewed view of "beautiful" has made any girl bigger than a size 5 feel overly self consious and hate towards her body. So people know that "fat" people have low self esteem and will react the way they want them to. If you suffer from that, please, take my advice, don't let it get you down. If someone cracks a joke, laugh! If someone makes a rude statement, make a snide clever one. People can be nasty! You don't have to be, stay yourself and don't try to change who you are! Good luck!

To me I do not think that its fun at all. I think that it is gross and sad. I think that people that sit back and make fum of someone that is over weight really needs a life and maybe a head examination.

It's not, you're an immature ***** whoes obviously got some phsycological issues if you take joy in taunting others and making them feel bad. See a doctor or a therapist.
