It just seems strange that the leaders of many western countries condemned the recent cartoons of Muhammad (regarded by many Muslims as blasphemous) while not even flinching at the fact that cartoons of Jesus have sometimes been a lot worse. Are Christians are just expected to laugh it off?

The Media is scared to death of Muslims and Black people. In short, political correctness is holding America Hostage.

Christians ("the Westerners") are generally more liberal and even relatively more enlightened than Moslems ("the Middle Easterners") having been the source of among enlightened philosophies that have stood the test of history. They know what is a "mockery" and what is a "blaspheme". They would just take mockery for what it is: calling your dad a snake would not take an iota of his "dadhood" from him! And so they brush off whatever idiotic is said about Jesus, knowing he will remain what He is! Some hardcore Moslems (not all!) are still "liberating" themselves from some unknown "slavery" and are reacting to every small thing including a bang from the neighbour's door! Western leaders know this and hence pamper them like you would your kid when he/she cries foul of someone having "looked" at him/her in a "funny way"! This attitude of the Western leaders will surely stabilise the world and assure us peace that Jesus loved to prevail in the world! They know this and also believe this to be a Christian way of life.

because Christianity is the religion of the dominant class. it's why we can make fun of white people in ways that would be racist if turned around, and why we can make fun of men instead of women, or rich people but not poor people. it's a matter of power issues. laughing at a minority group w/ less power comes off either as tasteless or hateful. so if there was lots of mocking of Muhammad, we'd look like haters more than w/ Jesus mocking.

Probably because America professes to be a democratic society with freedom of expression - so supposedly we can freely express our opinions thru a variety of means - words, protests, we can burn the flag, we can make fun of religious practices, symbols. If you don't like what someone says or expresses - you can state that also.
In Iraq and countries that Islam is dominant - you don't mock or play with their representation of God. Also, these people are serious and committed - they will blow you up - and enjoy a number of virgins in the afterlife.
In American - we profess to be a Christian culture - on our Saviors'(Jesus Christ for me) birthday (which is a lie) Christmas - alcohol sales is the highest.
In Iraq you cannot legally buy alcohol - if you have a family member that is in Iraq fighting now and they want alcohol - their families send it to them.
We don't respect who our Savior is - we shouldn't be mad at people that respect theirs.
The problem to be more concerned with is why we have allowed ourselves to disrespect our God (Jesus Christ)!

I think that the Muslims have been offended by the cartoons of Muhammad so they are retaliating by mocking Jesus. I personally don't think that's right & think that we should all just leave each other alone & let us live our lives.

Anytime their sacred nutjob Mohammad is made to look like a fool, (or talked about at all, apparently), the sh*t hits the fan in the Muslim world. A little before you or I were even born, a man named Salman Rushdie had a "religious assassination declaration" (Fatwa) placed on his head for simply mentioning Mohammad as a figure in his book "The Satanic Verses". Rushdie himself was a British-Indian citizen, and didn't even attempt to create controversy with the book, and next thing you know, he has a hit out on him for writing a book. I think if Family Guy blatantly featured Mohammad as a character in their show, they would rebel too.

People mock Jesus because he has become the patron deity of people who are lying, intolerant, bigoted, hypocrites. Not to say that all Christians are like that, but certainly enough to get George Bush his 51% mandate in the 2004 American election.

And yes, Christians ARE expected to laugh it off; e.g. turn the other cheek-- I think I read a book that said that at some point.
