If you're asking what the advantages are of meeting people online as opposed to in person (as has been the tradition for eons)...the internet opens up the whole world to you, whereas you may otherwise be limited to certain cultures, races, traditions, etc. I have met some wonderful people online that I never would have met otherwise, as well as many idiots and weirdos (they know who they are...LOL). But my internet friends are every bit as real and as important to me as those I have known in person (a few even more so). I think it's well worth the effort if you are careful about who you talk to and befriend. It takes some time to find the diamonds...but they are there.
