You can buy a router, such as one from D-Link or Linksys. Then, ensure that each of the PCs you intend to use have Ethernet somehow, either on-board (typically next to the USB ports in the back), or in the form of an add-on PCI card. If one does not, you may purchase an Ethernet card to plug into one of the PCI slots of your computer. Essentially, you will be setting up a network for these computers known as a LAN: local area network.

(If you don't know, Ethernet ports are shaped like oversized phone jacks.)

Once you are sure all of your computers have an ethernet port, and you have a router, you will need Ethernet cable (CAT-5) to connect them all together to the router. Most routers have 5 or 6 ports, one for your broadband modem and the rest for computers to plug in. Assuming yours has 5, you will need one ethernet cable to connect your broadband modem to the router, and then another to connect each of the computers to it.

I am, of course, assuming you have a broadband connection such as Cable Internet or DSL you are wanting to share. Sharing a dial-up connection is more difficult.

Now that you have all the parts you need, set up the router as its instructions suggest. Be sure, if the router supports wireless connections, to secure your wireless access point using the router's WEP or WPA settings. If you don't, anyone that drives by has access to your network, and could use your internet connection for malicious things.

Once the router is set up, you're ready to plug the computers into the router. While setting the router up, you probably gave your network a workgroup name. If you would like to share files and printers between these computers, or perhaps even play games over the connection, you will have to set all of the computers using the router to the appropriate workgroup. The sharing of the internet connection, however, should work without doing so.

If these computers are switching from dial-up to sharing a broadband connection, they may not immediately be able to access the internet from your web browser. To remedy this (in Internet Explorer), go to Tools, then Internet Options, then choose the Connections tab. Unless you intend to use dial-up in the future, remove all dial-up connections from the box. Then, click on the LAN Settings button and check the Automatically Detect Settings box. If you cannot get this to work, and you are using IE 6 or above, click the Setup button in the Connections tab.

Once you've done all this, you should have a functioning network sharing an internet connection.
