Really I do not care about language I speak English I came here under political asylum with my family. My sister is a citizen I am not jumping over being one I have no problem with Americans because to a degree it is part of what makes me whole I lived in Turkey then moved here when I was seven I am now 19. Next year I will probably file for citizenship but will still keep my Nigerian passport. I am proud of my culture like any other man. I answer your question because we did get past the political asylum and have been here a long time. there is no turning back. I agree the language should not be debated ,but Spanish people should not be accommodated and the other people left hanging. And the truth is people come here for the freedoms they might not have in their countries and yes mostly let thier culture ogo and become american.

Our forefathers had no particular interest in becoming "Americans" until they got really angry with England.
As for becoming African-American, Spanish-American, etc. - I think you'll find that our fellow Americans who are in minority groups have these terms foisted upon them by the majority Americans - and/or choose the hypenated terms because it is actually a way to show pride in the heritage *they* offer to America, in addition to the heritage offered by northern European Americans.
The so-called "debate" on what our national language should be is a hot-button issue cooked up by our politicians to garner votes. It's a way of getting us to look in one direction and away from more important issues.

The founders of American first came to the Colonies to be Englishmen, actually. It was those living on mainland Britian who first started thinking of the colonists as separate from England. People shouldn't have to change who they are just because they've changed countries.

We shouldn't. Its a ploy by politicians to distract the less aware.
Just like the flag burning and the gay marriage crap. Notice how the argument conveniently pops up during election years and mysteriously goes away after election, UNTIL the next election!
Don't let them sucker you into their pseudo-argument.
cheers

If what Mr BILLY BOY said is true then i think we should all learn the languages of the Native Americans. DIDN'T "Americans" MAKE them learn English (not to mention kill their people)???? YEAH I THOUGHT SO....idiot. I know you're probably the smartest one in the WHOLE trailer park but please keep your ignorance to yourself.
