Mistakes from even before the storm hit.
1) Levy funding shouldn't have been cut. They should have been finished.
2) The head of FEMA should have had more experience then Brown had, total incompetent.
3) The federal Government knew, Brown is on tape talking to the president warning him...

The entire federal government did a dreadful job of managing the Hurricane Katrina issue. The agencies and people in charge were totally clueless about the infrastructure problems the size of the devastation and they were ill prepared for the sheer number of people affected by the hurricane.

It is really apparent that, since the agencies handled the matter so poorly, everyone is watching those agencies to make sure they are on the mark and I think public pressure is leaving them little opportunity to make the same mistakes again.

It would have been nice if the Army Corps of Engineers had built the levees properly in the first place. I hope they are doing a better job this time. Every time I drive past where they are working on the levees, I wonder if they know what they are doing.

Our mayor made the mistake of assuming that everyone had transportation to evacuate, and the money and a place to go. Most of the poor in my city rely on public transporation for everything. They have no emergency funds for evacuation, which requires paying for food, hotels, and in the case of Katrina, meant weeks of living in strange places with nothing but the clothes on our backs. The mayor should have arranged for busses or something. He was short-sighted in that respect.

The federal government, I think, was simply stunned into disbelief for the first few days.

I don't think they acted fast enough. Where I live most people did not grasp the magnitude of the disaster right away. Which I think alot people are guilty of this as well. But the government should not have been one of them. I hope that they are better prepared but how many Katrina's can we handle. People may not be able to live in certian areas.

State and local government did a lousy job as well as the feds. We have local government to handle things of this nature, Then federal steps in. But the people of New Orleans were warned in plenty of time to get out of there, They should of left. It's not anyones responsibility to put you in a car and drive you to safety unless your disabled or too old or in the hospital, jail, etc.
Some people are so dependent on the government they need to be told its time to go to the bathroom! Be responsible for your own life!
Yes I think the government can handle it,The ?? s are the people smart enough to get off their butts and leave when told too!

Poorly. I really don't think they will be able to handle another hurricane unless we have new leaders in those positions. The majority of those ppl are living up here in Shreveport, LA and most of them haven't gotten over how they were treated. I volunteered 4 days a week at the shelter by babysitting and transporting them to nearby stores. Those ppl were treated like dirt. I can't blame them for disliking the gov't.

I'm still amazed at how many people think it's the federal responsibility to be the first responders to a disaster.

State, county and city have first responders roles.

Am I to expect federal help the next blizzard that hit?

We've been flooding like mad up here in the northeast. I've yet to see or hear of any federal personnel up here. I'm sure there ARE, but the STATE is doing IT'S job.
