Well, the answer your question is really pretty simple. First, after someone decides that they want to try a cigarette for whatever reason. (They may think it makes them look tough, they want to fit in with a certain crowd, they want to see why there friends smoke, so on and so on.) The person finds that they will become dizzy / relaxed from there first encounter with the nicotine. From there they will start to have a cigarette more frequently thinking that they will be able to control there usage of the nicotine, until they no longer get that “enjoyable feeling” from the cigarette. At this point they now are buying packs and smoke because they need to maintain the level of nicotine in there system or will suffer withdrawals. They are now are physically addicted to cigarettes and will need to detoxify there bodies in order to quit. Most do not choose to do so at that time thinking they can stop smoking whenever they want. Now the person not only needs nicotine, but has developed a hand to mouth “Habit” and is hooked. Smoking is extremely hard to quit
once you have started. And the longer someone smokes the harder it is to quit. The best advice is just don’t start.

I smoke, and it's because I have a very addictive personality. It doesn't matter what it is, if I like it I do it. I didn't always like ciggies, but booze made them better, and before you know it...
I've quit once--for a year. I worked out and ran and turned my "negative" into a "positive" and I felt GREAT!
then life happened, and stress took over and I just craved that comfort to fill the void in my life (lonliness, I had to move out of state and didn't no one person where I was going-plus it was stressful). Not an excuse, it's just what is.
So, now, I just say "I smoke, because I choose to"
It's simple. It's a choice. there is no reason, just the choice.
I once met a man, I was outside a hotel smoking. He told me that he had quit smoking 26 years earlier and still craved it. Every day, he chooses not to smoke; even though he wants to.

At first, for whatever cachet you get from the whole smoking experience - you look cool, you get to hang with a particular crowd, you tick off your parents, whatever.
I don't believe anybody ever starts smoking because they really dig the idea of sucking pungent, dangerous smoke deep into their lungs, into their blood, into their brains.
Once the cachet wears off, people smoke because they are addicted to nicotine.
I never smoked cigarettes, but I did smoke a pipe and occasional cigars for about ten years. I tapered off mostly because I don't want to smoke in the house, in the car, or around my kids. I haven't actually smoked anything in about three years.
And you know what? I think about it, I miss it, I want some of that nicotine. I can't imagine what it's like for someone who inhales two packs a day for a while and then tries to quit. I know many people (including my mother) who continue to smoke even though they have health problems due to smoking, even though they can't afford it, even though they hate the way it makes everything filthy and smell bad.
Best way to quit is never to start.

who knows??
I've always been a non smoker although my mum smokes so I passive-smoke :( and I find that when I leave the house for a weekend and get away from the smoke, I go through withdrawals and get headaches.
But to answer the question... I have no idea :S

Because it feels G-R-E-A-T!!!
Especially when you are drunk. Give it a try. You should really at least try it a few times to get over the first inital reaction.
Learning to smoke takes effort so keep at it as soon you will be able to answer your own question!

Many reasons. Everyone has their favorite.
Personally I don't smoke. We have been TRYING over 16 yrs now to get my mother-in-law to quit. She has every excuse in the book NOT to quit.
Her reason is she will gain weight.

It's an aquired taste, and then it becomes an addiction to the nicotine. Your body literally wants it and you feel "bad" without it. I am not a smoker, but I do enjoy a good cigar a few times a year. It's not that bad, but it's unhealthy.

people smoke because first they are curious. curious about what? how does it taste? maybe a sign of masculinity in men. . or just because they are rebelling against their parents. from the precepts of friends.. i dont know.. coz i do not smoke..
it depends on the person, the factors surrounding his or her environment..

It's a learned behavior that happens to be addicting and to insure future smokers.
