There are still some shelters around. Most any school, municipal or government building will have a basement or even a sub-level that was designed for such use.

If you look closely, you will even see some Cold War-era signs on the outsides of these buildings. They are yellow and black and have a symbol that is shaped like 3 triangles pointing down. They read "FALLOUT SHELTER" and were a very common sight until the end of the Cold War.

As far as civilians are concerned, the idea a building a do-it-yourself bomb shelter is not as practical as is was in the 1950's and 1960's. Most new neighborhoods are built with nearly all of their utilities and sewage systems underground. This limits the amount of space that can be devoted to a shelter.

If we ever get to the point where nuclear war seems imminent, we will have to rely on all levels of government to direct us to a safe location to survive. But, if you saw any footage of the evacuees of hurricane Katrina...it is pretty obvious that this country is nowhere near being prepared for such an event as that...let alone nuclear war.

I don't mean to scare anybody, but we need to be aware of this fact on a national and global level if we are ever going work toward peace.

Until then, keep the faith...

I don't think it will go as far as it did during the cold war. The N. Koreans tests were a dismal failure, and Iran, although they are completely nuts isn't quite there yet. I don't think any sane country would do a first strike to start a nucelar war. But N. Korea and Iran have insane leadership, so, nuclear war is a very real possibility in the future. The thing is, there are a lot of things that could happen, and we can't protect ourselves against everything. There is bio-terrorism there are suicide bombers, there are possibilities of a dirty bomb. If we worry about it all the time, then we can't live life. Everyone has to die somehow. Catching a nuclear missle wouldn't be the worst way to die. Especially if you were right in the blast zone and just burnt up immediately. It could happen, but so could a lot of other things. We could also step into the street tomorrow and get hit by a bus. I don't think people are going to panic over this.

Some one in the government will someday say push the button.Panic , you won't have the time really. If there is time it wouldn't be long .Shelters , all service bases have them and you do know the White House has tunnels and shelters ! But why live when you'll suffer without food , water ,or loved ones.If you made a shelter and it happened and some of the family weren't able to get there , how would you feel ? Or hearing your neighbors crying out " Please let us in " .No ,I won't be one to make a shelter , but I do believe someone will , someday try to destroy much of our country .We have made many countries angry . As for the USA , well we have been noted to vote on things , so while we're voting on it , we'll hear " We took out half of the USA yesterday ! " As the rest of the country states Okay should we counter attack ? Let's vote ! People are so power hungry , and selfish , controlling , makes me wonder why the animals didn't try more to stop us when they had a chance . Bet they wish they had !

Bomb shelters prolong the inevitable death. It takes many years for detonation area to be habitable again. Maybe if you live 50+ miles from a bombsite, you may be able to wait out the nuclear dust without a bomb shelter if you can live in the basement for a few weeks.
But don't forget, when one country nukes another, that country nukes others, and so on, so it will be a holocaust.
Have a nice day! :)

A fallout shelter is just a way of prolonging the inevitable. Even if you survived the initial exchange, you will not survive what comes after-nuclear winter and the extermination of all life on earth. Just one of our subs has more destructive power than every bomb used in World War II-including the ones dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima-combined. Mankind has the ability to destroy this planet at least 16 times over. Think about it.

Yes it will create panic but as far as I can see it is a topic that the viewers have seen as obsolete. It's a common thing that does not catch their attention anymore, therefore they don't panic, it's like the "Weapons of mass destruction", "Irrigation poisioning, etc. At first it was a big thing but as time goes by it's no longer a big thing.

Since we don't live in the 1950's and 60's, I think the craze of building bunkers and panicing is way in the past.

yes people will panic, yes people will start talking about them and maybe even making them.and you can bet your high heeled sneakers that the people in Washington will make a bee line to one the first sniff of trouble and folks like us will get zapped like an egg in a microwave.
