There is a charming little book which is very old (published in 1884) by a famous illustrator named Kate Greenaway called "The Language of Flowers". I have a copy which belonged to my grandmother, and I can't believe I knew where it was when I read this question. You might be able to find a copy somewhere, the color illustrations are old-fashioned, as are some of the flower meanings, but the little book is very cute. It was very common for people to communicate their feelings for each other (good OR bad) by what kind of flowers they gave or sent or brought to one another. Here are some examples:
type of flower = meaning
Garden Anemone = I am forsaken (sad, left alone)
Apple Blossom = temptation
Yellow Balsam = I am impatient
Small (white) Bellflower = You have my gratitude
Butterfly Weed = Let me go
Candytuft = Indifference
Cedar leaf = I live for you
Four-leaved clover = Be mine
Red columbine = I am anxious & trembling (my favorite)
Fern = You fascinate me
Forget Me Not = True Love
Ivy = Fidelity, Marriage
Japan Rose = Beauty is your only attraction
Spanish Jasmine = Sensuality
Purple Lilac = First emotions of love
Myrtle = Love
Oak Leaves = Bravery
Peach Blossoms = I am your captive
Rose = Love
Carolina Rose = Dangerous love
White Rose = I am worthy of you
Yellow Rose = Jealousy
Red Rosebuds = You are pure and lovely
Rhododendron = Beware, there is danger
Snowdrop = Hope
Trefoil = Revenge
Sweet Tussilage = You shall have justice
Blue violet = Faithfulness
Motherwort = Concealed love
Anyway, you get the idea. I guess just sending a bunch of random pretty flowers could have gotten you in big trouble in the old days.
Hope this helps. I had fun with it.
