a USB port is used to connect peripherals to a computer. A LAN is a local area network, wherein computers are connected via a router to share files and more commonly, to share an internet connection. So, the answer is no.

Sure, its already out. For about $ 20 you can get USB cables with a modem in between that can simualte a lan card and perhaps work even faster. Currently you can LAN 2 PCs using the usb port, but a router and a hub system that runs via USB should hit the market soon.

Yes, you certainly can.

The USB cable can be a substitute for a LAN connection ONLY if you use a special kind of USB cable that has the same connector on both sides , known as USB direct link cable .

You can connect 2 computers as a small network.

You can also connect computers to a USB Hub using these special cables and you can have a network as well.

see this link http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/usbmain.html

WORD OF CAUTION : this network will only work if you use the special USB cable described in the article .

You may be tempted to try to modify a standard USB cable to have the same connectors on both ends. Then , you may try to connect the cable between 2 computers .

IT WILL NOT WORK !!!!

The reason is because USB cables DRAW current from your computer to work . If you use a modified standard cable, each end will try to draw current from its respective computer and you could end up damaging yr USB ports or the circuits on the motherboard .

For another maker of this kind of USB cable,

USB is "Universal Serial Bus".
You can, say, connect your cable modem to your computer with USB port or with Ethernet card to connect to your LAN or Internet.

Yes you can use it but the port should be flat from both the ends. I've transfered files from my PC of my office to Laptop before leaving IBM.

If you have a Laptop & a PC then you can use Parallel ports (Printer Port) to connect the duo.

I believe you will satisfy your query and resolve your issue.
