Any kind of chest pain should be checked out by a doctor quickly.

However there are many things that can cause chest pain besides the much feared "heart attack" though if this is a new symptom it's best to play it safe and get checked out. But some of the other things that can cause chest pain:

Pleurisy - inflammation of the lining around the lungs,
Muscle Sprain/Strain, Panic Attacks, and Gastroesophageal Reflux (medical term for when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus) are the most common

All chest pain should be evaluated by a medical professional immeadiately. If this is something that has be ongoing, your doctor needs to order some lab work, an ECG (EKG) among other things. A stress test would also be useful. You should be especially concerned about chest pain that radiates into the neck, jaw or arm. If there is no radiation though, it does not mean that there is no heart problem. There are many, many causes for chest pain, and you need a diagnosis, especially if there is a family history of cardiac problems.

With pains like that, you really need to get to an emergency room and the best time is when they are happening, but my recommendation is not to wait, go now. Have your brother take you right away.

Sharp pains are not usually associated with heart attack, however it is best to find out exactly what is going on just to make sure it is not a life threatening problem. Best to be safe, not sorry. Don't wait, please. Your health is very important.
