All my friends have Macs and I have worked on Mac in the labs but I work with PC home. I feel comfy with the PC but I like the quality of the Macs. I heard it is very expensive to maintain a Mac well if something goes wrong you would have to buy a new one, but with a PC it does not take much to fix or upgrade the system.
Which computer do any of you recommend? Could I get a PC with a 1GB or similar to the G5s in Macs?

You can go for an AMD based Pc. Thay are cheaper faster and more reliable. You can go up to 2Gigs of memory on most boards, and you can upgrade the graphics into oblivion! Check for a machine with PCiXpress and serial ATA capability!

Traditionally Macs have been the first computers design software is made for. However PC versions of the same software are available and with little difference between them, except for keyboard shortcuts (the Ctrl & Alt keys on PC = Cmd & Option keys on Mac. Control key on mac is not the same as Ctrl on PC!).

The files you save are the same on either computer and can be opened by each other. Macs are stable and have this great OS that doesn't freeze or hang up ever (almost), and when one program crashes you can close it and it won't affect the other open programs. PCs are prone to freezing and hanging up more (used to be a LOT more, but now it's getting better)

PCs, they're cheaper but the parts come from all sorts of different places usually and so there will more likely be incompatibility issues with hardware. Macs are more expensive but because the OS and the hardware is by the same company the whole package works better. Macs give you just what you need; PCs give you lots of stuff that sounds impressive, but not usually what you're after or what you need.

I'd go with a mac myself. A higher-end system that can handle graphics well is recommended for bigger jobs that use up a lot of memory and need good speed to do operations. G5 towers are best for this. And the software is made for macs first, and PCs second. It may cost a bit more, but what you get is top notch stuff and definitely worth the extra dough.

Most designer s use Macs, yes, but at the end of the day I've never had a client ask what computer is their work being done on. If it gets the job done and your comfortable, then go for it.
Our studio runs both Macs and PC's without a problem.

laptop computers can be a rather tricky buy at times, I would suggest that you look out for the cheapest and yet latest desktop on the market,

the best way to do this is on what they call warehouse sale markets some of them are online.

these warehouse owners have a service where they sell laptop computers to normal customers like you and me, however with very reduced prices due to the fact that they do not have as much costs as normal shops do, such as rent and a employees etc. as you know most online shops have rather competitive prices sometimes cutting the laptop price to a half.

one such website for laptop computers warehouse with great sales all year around is :
