I had the same problem. I had severe breakouts always around the time of my periods. I used everything on the market, Proactiv inclusive, but never saw any improvement til I started using tea tree soap and oil. My morning and evening regimen: Exfoliate at night with St. Ives Apricot Scrub, wash with tea tree soap and apply tea tree oil on damp skin, especially when you have dry skin. In the morning skip the exfoliating bit and you're ok. Believe me, in less than two weeks, I had the smoothest skin you ever saw!! All I have to get rid of now are the spots left from the old acne. But I have not even a tiny bump on my face. Try it, it could also work for you!

I use the Clear Skin Regimen at http://www.acne.org. It's a non-profit (so it's free), the guy who created used to suffer from pimples himself. The system works wonders on my face, and its helped countless other people. The best part is that you don't have to order or buy any expensive treatments, everything you need for the Regimen can be found at your local drugstore. Find out more at the website.

In general, for clear skin it helps if you: don't touch/pick at your skin, drink lots of water, wash your hair frequently, change your pillowcases, exercise, wear little make-up (or if needed, hypo-allergenic makeup), and minimize stress.

Another tip is to look up online consumer reviews of acne products before you buy them, using sites like epinions.com or drugstore.com. A great website I use to get cosmetic reviews is makeupalley.com (A mostly women's site). Hope this helps!

Been running a test with several teens that get little or no results from ProActiv. Started with getting rid of poison ivy (long story-but great results). Believe it or not, MAALOX. Brand specific, don't know why except it works and some others don't.
The pharmacist that got me on it's use due I was looking for IVY DRY or that other stuff, when I said "that's an ant-acid, isn't it?" said, "Duuuu-yes". Try it, can't hurt and may surprise you.

I've noticed that when i wash my face with a facial scrub cloth, it works. what's even better is when I use Olay night cream. For some reason, it stops the breakouts. Not always.

Quit touching your face.
wash face before bed with vegetarian facial soap containing tea tree oil. Rinse very well with warm water, pat dry.
sleep with clean pillowcase
use a facial scrub daily to get rid of dead skin

AFAIK, proactiv is just benzoyl peroxide.

don't mess with antibiotics, they really mess up your insides with constant use.

Link is for some awesome cheap scrub I use that has benzoyl peroxide in it, you can find it at riteaid or wallyworld:
