There are diagnostic software programs and connectors that can be used to connect your laptop to your cars computer.

An easier solution would be to purchase and ODB II scanner available at almost any auto parts store. The only problem with that is a newer standard was created called ODB CanBus and is used on many later model cars (2004 and up).

You will need to find out which scanner works for your car.

It plugs into a connector found under the dash on the driver side. Plug it in, turn your key to the 'on' position (not start) and press "READ" on the scanner. It will list all diagnostic codes stored in your cars computer.

A newer standard being used is called ODB CanBus.

Software and adapters run in the 500 to 3000 dollar range and need to be upgrade each year. OBD 1 and two testers are available for 30 to 300 dollars that will do the same diagnostic
checks using lights instead of displays. Older On Board Diagnostics can be checked on GM cars with a paperclip
and a guide to the flashing check engine or climate control
lights. Google your car make and year and the initials OBD
to find one of the forums that will tell you about your car.

Not unless you have the proper connector and software.

Might be able to save you some time and trouble: If it's a Ford and the light stays on all the time, your O2 sensor is bad.

Yes, but for the price you'll pay it is better to take it in to a mechanic.

No. It is not worth it either. Better to take it to a mechanic or dealer.
