Whatever became of the actor, John Friedrich ?

Question

Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s there was a young actor who had a few memorable roles in films, and on television- most noteably in the 1979 movie The Wanderers, and the 1983 TV mini-series, The Thorn Birds. Shortly after Thorn Birds, the man virtually dropped off the face of the Earth. I've tried iMDB, and everywhere else on the net I can think of to find out what became fo him, with no luck. So, if anyone can tell me what happened to this guy, you will end my curiosity before it has a chance to kill that infamous cat !
