When I got married I took my husbonds last name. He was adopted and hates the last name they gave him he would like to go back to his original last name. the one he was born with

I think you could start at your local county court house, and they could direct you further. Or, you could google the name of your state and "name change" and maybe get something. You should know that this name change will cost you something.

Go to the local court house where you live. Barnes and Noble has books of "do-it-yourself" law guides so you don't have to pay an attorney.
The court house should have everything you need though. It's a matter of filling out paperwork and paying fees. They will have to publish the request in a public newspaper. If there are no objections, the name change is granted and you use the paperwork from the judge as proof so you can take it to the DMV for a new driver's license, etc.

you go to the courthouse. you will ahve to fill out paperwork, possibly go to court, and probably pay a lot of money, depending on the state. do a search on line for legal name change in whatever state you are in.

I had my name legally changed when I was 18 because I had my "father's" last name, but my step-father was the only father that I had ever known. We went to a lawyer, and he handled everything for us. So, go to a lawyer. They know what to do.
