Of course, it depends on what kind of sound you like.
The Beatles are always a good choice because they have many elements to their music, and each album holds a different type of song. The melodies tend to be good, they wrote classic love songs, and are simply a classic band. They are not as edgy as many bands, and a a great listen on many occasions.

Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and AC/DC are great bands if you like music leaning twards the more edgy side of rock, and also the louder, more heavy-metal side. These three bands have many hits, and are of great talent, and are great to rock out to.

Pink Floyd is a good choice if you like more "out there" music. Their song styles can vary from more quiet and peaceful, to intense and wild.

Queen is a good choice if you want a band intermixed with many styles. They have touches of broadway, opera, blues, jazz, pop, and funk, as well as elements of pure hard rock and roll in their songs. The band Styx is in some ways similar.

The Who, The Rolling Stones, and Cream are all classic bands who also vary in style, and who tend to be popular, and "classic"

If you are into classic rock on the border of southern and classic, go with bands such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top.

Jimi Hendrix is a great blues/rock guitarist who is often a good person to listen to.

If you want a band that is still going strong, and rocking out, you might try Aerosmith. for a band that is still going, and has more "political" songs, try U2.

YES is an interesting band, who is more involved with odd vocal parts, synths and weird voice effects than so many.

If you desire a band that has a lead singer with a very odd, high voice, I suggest Rush.

Bad Company is a great band with a very soulfull lead singer, and who has many hits.

Kansas, Journey, and Boston are all put into many genres of music. If you're looking for "Hard rock" these guys probably aren't for you.

All these bands are great, and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Give Def Leppard a chance. They're not as "Classic," as some of the other bands listed, but they formed nearly 30 years ago. They're horribly underrated. They have a lot of great songs (trust me....don't judge them by Pour Some Sugar On Me. As great as that song is...they have better ones). Their guitar players are absolutely amazing (I don't care what anybody says....Steve Clark wrote some of the greatest riffs of the 80s, and it takes TALENT to play like Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell). I would recommend giving the albums "High n' Dry," and "Slang," a listen. Also, "Hysteria," obviously.

My other two favorites are Queen and Aerosmith. Queen is one of the most unique, original bands ever. Aerosmith....well....they just rock! They've got some of the greatest classic songs of all time.

For classic rock I'd strongly recommend The Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles or Santana.

I'd recommend Yes, Pink Floyd, REO Speedwagon, early Journey, and Styx.

i might amend this list later, but this is a good start.

I am a R&B/Rap fan. But a couple of years ago I went through this same phase. I started with Aeorsmith only because Steven Tyler's voice is so soulful and I could relate a little better. Another good choice is Journey and Steve Miller. Take it from me you should start with the earlier bands and work you way up...the music earlier wasn't as hard and you can work you way into the harder stuff like AC-DC(awesome), and even Black Sabbath/Ozzy Osbourne

Rush, Led Zep, Bad Company, Def Lep, Pink Floyd, Doors, The Who, The Guess Who, Jimi Hendrix, Ozzy, Black Sabbath, Steppenwolf, America, Triumph, Shooting Star, (Old) REO Speedwagon, Boston, Bon Jovi, Journey, Kansas, Cheap Trick, BOC, BTO, Whitesnake, .38 Special, Kiss, Aerosmith, Cars, Police, CCR, Poison, Cream, Free, Rolling Stones, Foreigner, Alice Cooper, Van HALEN, SAMMY HAGAR!! Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Molly Hatchet.

All these bands, are still being listened to 20+ yrs later, and if people still like them after all that time they must be doing something right!! BTW: Def Leppard, should definitly be listened to because they have a one-armed drummer, Rick Allen, who when he was younger was very cute. Plus, any band who keeps their drummer after he lost his arm totally deserves brownie points!!
