June bugs are also called May beetles. They come out at different times of year depending on
the local climate. In northern states they may
really come out in June. Since many of the names
for things were given by naturalists in New England
this may be where the name originated. Further
south they appear in May or April, or possibly even
earlier.
Also there are many kinds of "June bugs" and the
time of year they emerge is variable. In the
Southwest the time of emergence may be keyed
to the beginning of the rainy season, rather than to
a certain temperature. Certainly in southern
Arizona certain scarab beetles (which is what June
bugs are) emerge in summer.

June Bugs, or June Beetles, actually pupate in June, emerging in their adult form in July or August. In some places this can be earlier or later, depending on the temperature. In fact, in some places, these are known as May bugs/beetles because of that fact.

In my experience, they will typically emerge from pupation as adults anywhere from the last week in June to the first week of August. There are several different species with the same common name, so it can be a little confusing at times. There are several species in this genus (Phyllophaga) that do emerge in June, so they are probably respopnsible for the name. When trying to understand animals, never rely on common names, the same is true for mayflies, who most emerge in june, and Junebugs and ladybugs, who arent bugs, but beetles. It is never wise to base any bilogical data on a common name. I hope that clears things up a bit.
