Hamas can - release the soldier and stop the rocket attacks. Then, whether Israel likes it or not, it will have to withdraw.

This is a ridiculous situation brought about by extremist loonies on both sides. But on this occasion its the Palestinians who bear the greatest guilt - Israel has been acting responsibly in recent months, in fact it has been trying hard to be accommodating.

The kidnap of the soldier was unprovoked and the failure to release him immediately was a serious tactical error by Hamas - Hamas missed a great opportunity to show Israel and the wider World that it is not just a bunch of terrorists but is capable of mature diplomatic governance. Sadly, it has demonstrated the opposite and done the Palestinian people no favour.

What was it that Abba Eban said? ... that the Palestinians have never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity. I was very sympathetic to them in my younger years ... actually still am, but will point out that Zionists once had terror organizations too ... Menachem Begin was a leader of the "Irgun Zvei Leumi". When Zionist leaders had a chance to form a real nation, they put aside ideological differences and disbanded such organizations, realizing that these were now obsolete. When Palestinians as a majority make the same leap, they will become winners again. This means putting aside poisonous notions of revenge and beginning to build constructively on a different paradigm. Israelis and Palestinians can both be winners and will be vastly stronger when on the "same side". It will change the whole picture of the Middle East and in fact is their true destiny. That day will come. It could possibly come sooner.

Speenth; right on. I was just going to offer a cynical answer, since this foolishness has been going on my whole life. I was in the Navy in the late seventies, and you could hear the fighting going on from the ship at night when we stopped to port in Haifa. The Arabs in the vicinity would do better to emulate the Israelis; their relative prosperity is a wonder, given the obstacles they have overcome. It's not the only area of the world where people don't seem to know how to let go of old grudges, but is certainly near the center of greatest disquiet at the moment. It strikes me as a little like the question of how to 'end poverty' ; well, if you just get rid of all the people, the problem will go away.... not a practical solution, but an honest one.

And Rafael* ; yeah, right, the same Isreal that blew one of our ships out of the water. And we all know the Arab nations are so poor. It's the Zionists and the Illuminati !

This is a simple answer.

1) It has nothing to do with who is backing who.
2) Problem is neither side will ever learn to get along. My opinion back out of all peace talks and let them at each other, last one standing wins. This will never end.

Everytime one side takes a step forward the other oushes back three. Hamas recognized them, some crack jobs on for Hama didn't like there leadership's decision and kidnapped a solder. The other side instead trying to work with the kidnappers, just started shotting.

As long as such earth-shattering problems such as who will be sitting next to whom, and in what order, etc, have to burden the minds of those who would broker the peace talks, and can make the difference as to whether the peace talks will take place, No.

Israel is not terrorizing anyone. You would do the exact same thing if one of your soldiers was kidnapped. Israel has the right to defend itself from terrorist attacks and from kidnappings.

No, you cannot stop the Israeli terror, they are backed up by the U.S. military might and money.
