This world cup had all the ingredients of an everlasting classic, but FIFA have screwed it up big time. The refereeing was pathetic and biased & made everybody believe that the games were fixed - this eventually led to people losing interest in it.
OK, we have got a classic final coming up, but look 2 or 3 years from now on: people will still talk about the horrible refereeing that has plagued this cup & the amount of unsporting behaviour from the teams like cheating, diving, nasty tackling & the flurry of cards. Also, this tournament has been predominantly defense-oriented - but that has more to do with the host country & it's "football" climate.

I think the Group Stages of this World Cup have been some of the best. The minnows performed well against the bigger teams and it is good to see some of the developing nations, like Angola making there name on the world stage, whilst bringing a new dimension of vibrancy and excitement to international football.
I think the knockout stages have been poor the big teams have failed to put in the big performances and moreover have not promoted the strengths of the beautiful game, Portugal and Argentina to name a few.
The most important factor in this World Cup effecting the quality of the games I feel has been the referees. They are failing to ex sponge the dark sides of the games such as Simulation but also have become far to adverse to the strength and power of the game and almost eradicating the physicality of the sport; which I believe is just as 'beautiful' as the Ronaldinho step-over or the Robben run.
Although on the field I would agree some of the quality of previous tournaments has been lacking a big plus has been the atmosphere and the fans. Watching on T.V. the fan parks and the carnival atmosphere of the entire tournament has made it one of the best. Congratulations Germany great hosts!

I'm happy with the two final teams so I can't honestly say that this WC was poor. I had hoped Argentina would have gone all the way but I gave up that dream a week ago. Like always some of the reffing calls have been questionable although I do believe that the two teams left deserve to be there. I think the poor quality you're talking about is the constant diving and faking that a lot of the teams this year seemed to do overwhelmingly (I won't name names but we all know who the class A divers are ;)) That takes away from the sport and I have to say I was disgusted by the antics of these cheaters. Hopefully you'll enjoy the final game and there will be no shananigans.

In my eyes this years world cup has been poor. The group stages were good and were full of attacking play, while the knock out stages have been very defensive by all teams including England who have been playing the most defensive football they have ever done, the genius of Sven who believes it's right to defend a 0-0 scoreline.
The refereeing has been very poor also, not always the refs fault as FIFA bring in new rulings at every world cup and the refs are not really reffing in the spirit of the game, as they all have their agendas and want to ref the final. When you see that refs are being told to clamp down on fouling and tackles from behind so they throw a yellow at every foul, sometimes not even a foul, and believe this is what fifa wants.
And the diving has been the worst i have seen in any tournament and Fifa claim they wanna punish divers, well Portugal's antics in the semi final where they dived whenever they got near the penalty area has given them the perfect opportunity to tackle diving, but somehow i doubt any action will be taken against Portugal.
So all in all, all these factors have contributed to this being one of the poorest world cups, especially attacking wise as i believe this world has one of the goals goals to game ratios in world cup history.

While it is of course wonderful because it is the most important singlesport, or for that matter multiplesport tournament in the world for many people, and has 64 games in a month, I think all-time it must be considered rather poor (though no fault goes to Germany, the hosts). It has the second lowest goals-per-game average in the history of the tournament, there have been HUGE reffing mistakes by the referees (U.S.A., Tunisia, Australia, and Portugal all got unfair deals due to refs), and so far there just hasnt been a "classic match", a match people will remember not just until the next world cup, but for decades. ARG-MEX, POR-FRA, GER-ARG, and ITA-GER have all been good, but so far a match just hasnt been GREAT. So, on the whole, I would say that it has been rather poor, yes.

USA 94 was probably the worst world cup. This world cup has been quite entertaining. 86 was my favorite. 90 I was home in Italy :) They wer eboth spectacular. I also enjoyed 2002. Although my team was ranked and South Korea did not deserve to be where they finished the tournament by any means, I though Turkey was a deligtful surprise, playing incredible passionate, tactival and skilful footbal.

The lasting memory of this World Cup is of supremely talented players such as Thierry Henry, Ballack, Joe Cole and even Ronaldo falling down looking for free kicks or penalties.
They have deprived the World of a fantastic sporting spectacle and have earned no credit for themselves

I agree that this world cup has been pretty forgettable. With the exception of a couple of matches (Argentina v Mexico, Italy v Germany) ... all the rest of the games haven't been up to the quality of Champions League games.
