I don't want to use online methods and I am not too confident in starting up conversations with total strangers.

If you have children, get totally involved in whatever activity they are into, whether it be sport, clubs, etc. You'll meet other parents of which you'll have something in common with.
If you don't have children, then try a church group or a civic group.
Of course, if you find a job, you can make friends there, too.
You might even consider a support group for divorced people.

I'm in the Jaycees and it's one of THE best groups around! We are a non-profit org. that does stuff in the community, have projects year-round and there are five areas of opportunity for development!

Join community clubs. Church, toastmasters,welcome wagon,Shriner's etc. Join the YMCA. Join civic clubs. Or just go shopping. In the laundry mat. People don't want others to talk anyway mostly they want good listeners. People in general are starved for someone like yourself to just listen.

sports, softball seems to work really well cause people tend to have a few beers to loosen up.
