If you don't want to do the whole network thing, you can burn your files on the old computer onto a disk, then just transfer the disk to the new computer. That way, you'll be making back ups at the same time, if you choose to sell the older one or use it for something else.

Here's another answer: get a USB data cable and connect the two with it. I also agree with the 2 previous answers. But if you do the whole lan thing, you have to make sure you connect them to the same workgroup and enable sharing on your whole drive. Flash drives are good, or even CDs. But it depends on how many files you are moving. If you have the equipment to LAN these, that would be the best. If not, it gets pricey to do this. If you have a flash drive, USB drive, that would be second. If you don't have one, these are really cool devices and I suggest you invest 50 bucks on one (I think 50 bucks can get a gig theses days). 3rd would be my suggestion, they cost around 20 bucks and you will probably use this once in a blue moon. Try to find a friend who has this stuff. Hope this helps.

If you don't have a whole lot of files and a fairly fast internet connection, just email them to yourself. Easy easy easy. Otherwise, a USB drive is probably your next best bet unless you have a huge amount of files to transfer (you would be better off to network the computers together at this point).

A Crossover cable would work just fine, btw. If you have an old RJ45 to RJ45 cat5 cable (aka "ethernet cable") laying around, you can cut it in two and rewire it to be a crossover. It is really easy, just search online.

If both has modem then use the telephone line and the Hyper Terminal feature to get the files on to the other. ( its in accessories >Communication>hyper terminal) . Normal phone bills apply.

If both has lan card or modem and can be connected to the net, then upload the files to megaupload or esnips.com or even your yahoo account and then use the other laptop to get the files downloaded.

You can use a criss cross cable and two lancards to connect them together and transfer files.

use a USB HD, pen drive etc or burn a CD or DVD ......

What kind of laptops are they? If they are macintosh laptops running Mac OS X, you can connect them via firewire cable and run the "Migration Assistant" utility in Applications>Utilities>Migration Assistant to automatically move all your old files, folders, applications, settings, etc to the new one. Good luck!
