If you are looking at HR/IP, then you gotta figure that there are relievers that come into a game to face one batter, who then hits a HR, that would be 0 innings pitched, and 27 HR/IP (it would be figured out the same way as an ERA).

So, let's look at last nights A's/Angles game. Escobar gave up two HR's in 6 IP, so you're looking at 3 HR/IP. The relivers combined for 2 2/3 IP and gave up 1 HR, so they gave up 3.375 HR/IP. Even if a reliever gives up only 1 HR, he could have a higher HR/IP than a starter simply because the starter has more innings to bring down that average.

I'd say starting pitchers because they don't usually pitch the whole game, and if they're taken out of the game, it's usually becuz the other teams have gotten too many hits off their pitches. It's logical to think there would be some HRs in there, right? However, relief pitchers don't always make the situation better, do they? Hmmm, this is a really good question. I hope someone has a real, statistical answer.

I would guess SP's as well. 99% of the times I watch a game where a RP comes in, they hardly ever give up home-runs. A walk off jack is hard to come bye. Most of the time the RP's are letting up the singles, and doubles. I guess we'll have to go to ESPN on this one, as they are the nations leader in useless facts.

Wow! Interesting question, guess it depends on the team. That is something to ponder.
