Typically appealing areas for prominant rippage: knees, under the bum, above the thighs in front
Now.. How to properly mutilate your jeans....
Double up a bit of the jean, dead center of where you'd like your tears, snip to make a nice little hole then cut it in either direction to the width that you'd like the hole, continue slicing that way until you have the length of the hole/rippage that you want.
Keep in mind that depending upon where you're putting the rips (especially the knees) they will tear further across as you move in them and it's better you make the tears yourself as than letting them rip on their own in awkward directions.
To add the cool worn looking frays (beared horizonal threading) firmly rub the torn jean between your fingers and some should come loose. Also try using a blade to do this. For more frayage that won't be in tact, that'll add great texture run the blade back and forth right over the edges of the torn jean and threads will start coming loose. Pull at some of them them. Try making little snips in the jean then mutilating the snips so to add more texture.
Just play with 'em. It's fun. : ) You'll quickly pick up the detail techniques as you work.

I don't know if there's actually a way to do it correctly. Just make sure you don't fray the edges too much, cause jeans won't last long after that.

use a blade to cut the thread of the denim. cut those threads little by little until you make a hole through it. it would look better if you wash it before you wear it.
