I actually have a weird situation. I am one of those hyphenated people. I added my husband's name to mine, but I did it because his sister has the exact same first and middle name that I do, so I hyphenated mine hoping that the credit reporting people and other bill collectors would keep us separate. (She has never paid a bill in her life) didn't work though, still have to prove to Cablevision every couple of years that I did not live in Kansas in 1993. Definitely strange.

I did; I never cared for my maiden name one way of the other, and it was more important to my husband than it was to me. My friend Sue, though, had only sisters, and wanted to pass on her family name, so she kept hers, and hyphenated her kids names. I have another friend who took her mothers maiden name when she turned 18 (deadbeat Dad) and kept that (hyphenated) after she married.
I think people should do what they want to in this case; if your father was a source of great pride for you, keep his name. If it is more important to your husband than to you, take his. Or, like my friend Nancy, be a feminist & take your Moms name. Or take the easy way & hyphenate. Whatever floats your boat.

Yep!!! Its common in India! Why? You havent done the same? But actually, some girls nowdays prefer to keep their own family name, or add the husband's family name after their family name.Gives them a dual surname..... Singh Chowdhary etc etc...............
