I think they like to run their fingers through it or feel it brush against them when they hug a woman. It is another way in which a woman can be softer and smoother than a man. Men are generally not allowed by society to be soft or have long hair, although that's changing a bit. Also, it can be styled in many different ways and they may like the surprise of seeing how each style can change how a woman looks. It probably does get associated with youth, femininity, sexiness, and traditional gender roles. Some guys may prefer long hair, but I think most won't rule out a girl with short hair. I haven't noticed much of a difference in the attention I've gotten with long or short hair.

Long hair is a fad now, being in that most women have their hair styled in this way. This, therefore, leading to men liking it because it is the way most women are, and men like women. Also, young men may see short hair as a sort of sign of youth, being that the majority of long-haired women are young.

Well for me its probably due to the fact that my mother has short hair. She's a nice woman but I really don't want to be reminded of her when I'm dating someone. Why other guys have a problem with this could come from them being insecure about their own masculinity since a woman with short hair may have the stereotype of tomboyishness attached to her. Another reason could be that they are simply conditioned to prefer women with long hair, whether through life experience or the perception of society's ideals I can't say. Probably a little of both.

I've always liked short hair on a woman. Not as short as mine mind you. A girl needs some hair, but it doesn't need to be down her back. For me, it's shoulder length at the LONGEST.

Er, ummm... don't know.
According to Paul Fleischman's "Whirligig" character, it's attractive. "...Show me one model who looks like she gets her hair done by the US Marines. Long hair is mesmerizing to male humans..." Other than that, no clue. Maybe they /do/ like to pull it?
