Welfare lets someone get sucked into a trap that's very difficult to pull yourself out of, because when you try to make steps towards independence, they cut you off, all the time barely giving you enough to live on.
Since you both lost your jobs, what about unemployment? Surely one or both of you can find another job within the 6 months you can stay on it?? Not only that, but you may want to look into going and getting higher education while you're still low-income and eligible to receive grants that will pay for it.

Ignore the people saying it's a hand up not a hand out, they may be saying it for the right reasons, but it sounds like a warning,...lol
Both of you would do better to apply seperately and both of you claim partial custody of your child. What they give you to support yourself is not nearly enough, so you'd do well to get help on both sides from your child.
On another angle, I just wanted to say how proud I am of you for the way you are handling this. As a parent and a person now a days, people tend to try and play the pity card in situations like this. You on the other hand have accepted the severity of the situation and are asking for help not pity, you must be a great role model to your son or daughter. Your beautiful little family is what Welfare was created for, and I will gladly pay any taxes to help good people like you, stay on it until your positive you can stand on your own feet, again, like I said this system was put in place for productive members of society like yourself that just need a little help. The best of luck to you and your family.

Apply for unemployment and dont give up on the "hunt" for a job!! If you can wait 2-3 weeks for the checks to be released. And if you think welfar is the route you want to take do it together, continue the "hunt" and s previously stated keep in mind "it is a hand up not hand out".

I don't know where you live but usually if there is a man in the house you will get more if you apply as a family but I don't know what your state law says since some of them are different.

Do it together -and be honest in all that you report. There are many great programs out thier for just his purpose. This is what welfare is for...when you had jobs, your taxes helped others...its okay to get help back!! GOOD LUCK!

Apply together. When you worked, you paid your taxes into it now let them help you in your time of need.
