I'd recommend the winky cherry series - I think it says 7, but if the 6 year old was as interested as my child was, they can do it...

The first book has them whipstitching simple stuffed animals, which quickly became catnip animals at my house...

I have seen children's sewing craft kits at WalMart that would work for age 6 or above.

I don't know if children would be able to figure out sewing at that age.
Maybe get them started knitting.

yes try the KLUTZ book series embroiderey set. its easy and fast and gives good instructions.
