They are in different families, so there are several differences... The most commonly known one is that crocs have pointed snouts/jaws (V shaped) while gators' are more rounded (U shaped). The teeth in the lower jaw are exposed in crocs but sheathed in gators. Crocs also have a salt gland that enables them to tolerate more marine habitats. There are SEVERAL species of crocodile found all over the world, while the only species of alligator are the american and chinese (VERY endangered). There are also crocodilians called Caiman, which resemble crocodiles but are more closely related to gators, and gharial which are a family of their own.

there are a few differences for starters they are entirely different species and there are then subspecies of those. alligators are smaller, darker skinned sometimes, have "froggy" eyes with round pupils, broader snouts, and calmer creatures in general
crocs are larger, better adapted to salt water, much more aggressive, slit pupils, mean suckers...

They are two different animals. There scales are a little different. There snouts are shaped a little different. I'll be the first to admit, that if I see one of them, I couldn't tell you which one it was. I'd be to qusy getting away from it.
