Animal manure is a great addition to your compost pile. It is organic. Another benefit is it is high in nitrogen and will make your pile heat up faster. Just be sure NOT to use manure from any animal that eats meat, you will introduce pathogens you dont want into your hard won compost.

Everything not man-made is organic... fruit, compost, manure.... so add some compost, which is organic, to manure, which is also organic, and you get lots of organic produce.
Now if you want potent fertilizer, out of all the animal manure (horse, pig, cow...etc), then choose Chicken droppings - they smell very strong, but it's the best out there.

I don't have a good recipe for fertilizer but I can tell you that for any kind of container planting, you DO NOT want to use top soil. Potting soil is the best way. I learned from experience. Top soil compacts too easy and will not allow enough oxygen to flow. There are organic potting soils available. I would use the top soil in a garden in the ground.

Depending on what the cows, pigs, etc. ate manure is organic. Look up "organic" at www.dictionary.com
