Are Spanish speaking people the only people who spell soccer futbol, and everybody else in the world except America spells it football?

Oh, and the other question is: Why is America so backwards? We don't use the metric system, we call "football" soccer, and a different sport football, we spell "colour" color, and we have a million meanings for one word or phrase...is this because someone had the bright idea of being different than the rest of the world?

Well see you have to understand something...We Americans like to do things our own way, even if we steal the idea from somebody else...which happens quite a lot, especially with language. It's like we try as hard as we can to confuse the hell out of people that are trying to learn english by changing the meanings of words or spelling them differently.

On that note...what's up with words like 'bass' ....why would a tone and a fish have the same spelling and a different sound, that kinda bothers me. People from "Brazil" spell it Brasil...and so does everyone else...but we Americans decided to sub a z in it, maybe it looks cooler ;)

But to get to your question about Futbol and Football.....it doesn't make much sense why we call it soccer...in American Football..only the kickers actually touch the ball with their feet...it should be called something else.

I probably didn't say anything relevant to the question, but I just felt like answering.

Outside of Spanish speaking countries (and the U.S.) soccer is referrred to as football. "Futbol" is just the Spanish translation of football. As far as the metric system, I have no idea why we didn't use it, but it would be kind of a pain in the *ss to switch everything over now.
As far as the language difference, American English is just a different dialect than Old English, or Queen's English, or whatever you want to call it. It's the same with most languages; The Spanish spoken in Spain is slightly different than the Spanish spoken in Mexico, Cuba, South America, etc.

Not only Spanish people (European), also Latin people, like in south America, Central America, and other Latin America countries spell futbol, when they mean football, and i guess they have a million meanings for one word or phrase to be more practical and say a lot of things in few words. Maybe trying to make an easy learning language and a universal one.

Football depends on language. And in Europe, our football is referred to as American Football.
Tu parles en francais ? j'etude en l'ecole por six ans. Mes amies n'aime pas mon francais.
We also do not spell poatatoe correctly. George Washington, the father of our country spelled it with an "e" on the end.
Americans are the best thieves in the world. We used to trade stocks on 1/8th's because the original Wall Street traded in Spanish pieces of Eight.
Our banking system is Dutch if I remember correctly.
And we even speak English our way. I think America took the best ideas, even democracy from ancient Rome and somewhat from native Americans who used a similar system and improved them until Bush !! got elected. Remember, never vote for a Bush and a Dick, just doesn't sound right unless,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Spanish is pronounced the way it is written. If it were spelled football, people would say foh-ott-bye or something like that instead of football or futbol....

I think so, but I don't know for sure. Huh, I guess we want to be different or something, even though like, England's English is more pure! I love the way they spell things, or maybe its just cuz I was born there...but we moved here when I was 6 months old, so i dunno.

It is a good question.
cause instead of soccer they should call it FUTBOL.
