Find a job first. It would be bad to move there, go broke, and not be able to get home.

Monster , Yahoo Hotjobs, Careebuilder are some of the largest job
boards, where you can upload
your resume. Since Craigslist, allows free job postings, many smaller
companies post their
vacancies on this online classifieds website. You can search for jobs
from multiple websites using
aggregators like SimplyHired and Indeed. Referrals are also becoming a
increasingly popular way to
get hired. More details available at http://tinyurl.com/emdyn

If you have enough money saved to live for a couple of months then move. If not it might be a better idea to get a job first.

I don't blame you...I hate NY also...but if you don't have a job lined up buying a home or renting a decent apt will be tough.
1st Find a Job....(don't tell them you haven't moved yet)
2nd Find a home....(they will want to see your offer letter)
3rd Move....

Find a job first if you don't have any savings. If you have plenty of money then just go.
