I don't like any term that categorizes and classifies a certain group of human beings, but differences are reality and should be celebrated, and used to educate not discriminate.

I've often wondered about this, but have been too shy to ask any black people that I know personally, for fear of offending them.

Is African-American the correct term or is it just a politically correct term propagated by the American media? Does it apply globally?

What about black people from Jamaica and the tropics and other continents/countries besides Africa? Do they want to be called African-American?

There are white people in Africa too, especially South Africa. If they immigrate to the U.S. are they considered African-American?

What do you call black people who do not live in the US? African-Canadian? African-English? I am sincerly confused and uneducated on the topic.

What about black people in Africa? Are they African-Africans? Are Jamaicans African-Jamaican?

Please someone enlighten me.

How about letting them take the lead in what they want to be called? Everyone is different. I think of it the same way I think about what to address a person by. Ex. I had a roommate named Christopher. He didn't like to be called Chris. I've been noticing the trendy "Topher," as another potential nickname. I'm guessing it's not as new as it seems. I think that's cute, but if someone wants to be called by their full given name, so be it.

Let me summerize it like this: On Monday, you encounter a dark-skinned person in a meeting. Somehow, the conversation turns to what s/he likes to be refered to as, and s/he says "Black." Ok. that individual is a black person.

Tuesday, you overhear a group of dark-skinned people refering to themselves as the African American Community. What do you think they want to be called?

The (relitively minor) issue I have with calling dark skinned people black is that the only parts on their body that are truly black are the parts on a white person's body that are pink...so why don't we call white people pink people?

Hey...I got a better idea: Why don't you call us all...PEOPLE!!!!
