If you are using their network and ISP they can, in theory, track your internet activity. Most network systems have some provision for tracking and security purposes.
Best advice is to abide by whatever guidelines they issue you about personal internet use. Some say don't do it, others allow discreet use of the internet during breaks.
Don't download porn, and keep other personal activities to a minimum. E-mail would probably be okay, as long as you are reasonable about it.
If the employer says no personal internet use, then don't do it. Save that activity for your personal computer at home, using an ISP you pay for.

If you are using a computer in a business envoirnment for anything it is possible (and as time goes on even more and more probable ) for your activities to be an element of full disclosure at any time-----it goes without saying that your use on and within the network can and most likely will be monitored---but when you are talking about the element of not being logged onto their network is still no guarantee of your activities not being found out ----there are numerous programs that more and more businesses are installing that track all of the uses of all of their computers all of the time---there has just simply been too much abuse by too many people for far too long in this area and alot of businesses are agressively seeking a cure for the wasted man-hours and computer time etc----so delete your cookies and trash your files to your hearts content but if your company has one of this watch dog programs installed and running---your activities are a part of public record and there will be no deleting that

Yeah they can even if you delete it through those means there always a trail that they follow but that is if they want to actively want to search you computer. I have seen it happen to a police officer at the University I attended. He did the same thing and the deleted files and history made them suspicious enough to investigate and he ended up losting his job. My advice is if you are good something that isn't allow on the computer don't do it. It's not worth the risk of loosing the job.

How are you using their internet but not on their network? That doesn't make sense. If you're using the company's property, and you use it for "personal" reasons, they have the right to restrict your activity, access, sanction you, write you up, fire you. Trust me, it's in your employment contract.
Can they track you? You bet. It's in their best interest to do so.
