Both versions began with an organ intro but the one that was the "hit" in America had the much stronger organ intro, in spite of the fact that the band didn't even have a keyboard player! (Of course, the band who did the UK hit version did have a keyboard player.)

Think again. Organ intro to the song. Very heavy & louder on the stronger (my opinion) version by the group who had the "minor" hit in the US.
It was somewhat atypical of their ususal sound.

The band who had the American "hit" only released two more singles after this one before disbanding. The were on Epic.

OK, last hint before deletion. Both groups, of course, are British Invasion veterans. The one who had the UK hit (fairly big) was in the midst of a string of hits with their second lead singer. The group who had the US hit (minor) only released two more singles after this one. They were already reduced to a quartet from their original quintet configuration. Later evolved into a much bigger group than either put together!

That last "(minor)" above was a mistake.
