If you add all the pips on a die,it equals 21.Einstein said,"God doesn't play dice with the universe".Many other physicists have disagreed with that statement.Obviously,if god is ,or isn't playing dice, that means two die.21+21=42.
Now,given that God is,or isn't, what he,or she, is,then every side of the dice is in play, simultaneously at the same time(which see omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience.)So all pips count on every throw, hence 42.Or not.

Because that was Douglas Adams' sense of humor. The question gets posed:
"What is the answer to the question of Life, The Universe, and Everything"
The answer is returned as "42"
The trick, you see, is that we don't actually know what the "question" is. I mean, Literally, what is the question?
Don't Panic, just read Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The Trilogy happens to be one of the best literary pieces ever written, loved by young and old across the world.
On a side note: My personal favorite book out of the Trilogy is Book 4, "So long, and thanks for all the Fish". I didn't care for book 5, but that's due to the ending.
If you don't get it, you just have to read the first book or two, I reccomend going until book 4.
Also, no matter how good the movie is, and it rocks, it's so much better if you've read the books. I mean, the whole dolphin thing doesn't even come into it until book 4.

It is from a novel and British sci fi comedy series, "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy". People of the future build a computer to answer the question about the, "universe and everything." The computer gives the answer of 42 which befuddles people all the more. The people begin to wonder what the question is that 42 answers. The story is about the quest for the question. The point of the story is given by an eccentric scientist character who says that we arn't ever likely to figure these things out so he figures he'll just enjoy himself while he is here.

It has never been proved that 42 is not the answer to the universe, therefore, 42 must be the answer to the universe.

you have been watching the Hitchhiker Guide to the Universe?
Well it one of those in ponderable question for why? but I think this is what the supercomputer meant it's " for two not 42 (which the aliens that build it miss heard it to meaning 42)" meaning God made the universe for two people which according to the Bible it true. but in the show the supercomputer couldn't answer it because it lack the memory and power need to do that so they need to build a bigger supercomputer so they did , The Planet Earth at the end of the show the real answer was "It she the one?"
However we human already answered that question with " Why not?" meaning when you know the why not's ,you know the why?
Hope this answer your question

Darcy, we can't know the question, because if we knew the answer and the question in the same universe it would instantly be zapped out of existence and replaced with something even more bizzare (it is also entirely possible that this has happened sever times already).
And in answer to the question, the real answer IS supposed to be 47 or 49, but because the 2nd class Golgafrincham's crash landed on Earth 2 million years ago, wiping out the original humans and replacing them thereby screwing up the whole program and slightly altering the answer, it's like putting +21 to the end of e=mc^2.

Because of the if the second most stupendous computer in existence built specifically to answer the question of the universe says it is, who are we to question it's purpose. And if you question the design ability of mice, then you're just an idiot.
