It is a sad story about sad people. George did it so Lenny wouldn't suffer at the hands of strangers. It was better that it come from a kindly comrade rahter than the posse. I know that doesn't make much sense, but it was George's last gift to Lenny. In some military operations, where no one can fall into an enemy's hands, it is sometimes necessary to kill a wounded comrade to end suffering (MUCh nicer than what the enemy might do). I think this is what George had in mind.

i read that for school last year, it was a really good book. i was sad and confused when george did that to lenny. but he had to do it so lennie wouldnt have to be in pain when the boss's son would catch him. i cried at the end to. i also saw the movie, which was good too.

It's a love story in the purest sense.
One man could not bear to see another suffer so he took his life as the lesser of two evils thus giving himself a burden of guilt to carry through the rest of his life.
He sacrificed his own peace of mind so that Lenny didn't meet a more dreadful end.
It happens in war.

i read it way back in high school, and yeah it was a sad thing indeed in terms of that george character...so full of life and wonderment that he ends up killing that poor sod! it was a contrast of what man is capable of doing in terms of creating and destroying and that is a great example of duality painted up by the author...you'll enjoy reading classics such as the great gatsby and the sun also rises, if you havne't done so already-that's fitzgerald and hemingway...good summer reading!
