The term " Flea Market " comes from the French term " Marche Aux Puces. " This was an open market in Paris, that sold goods that were susceptible to infestations by flees and other pests. The first use of the term Flea Market, in the United States can be traced back to the early 1920's.

Flea market comes from the French marche aux puces, a name originally given to a market in Paris. The fleas were thought to be in the goods, because they were of the kind to attract vermin. The earliest English use we have found dates from 1922.

From the French "marche aux puces." It either meant fleas were in the old couches they sold or else the marketers had to flee to a spot outside of Paris cause of Napoleon marching his troops through all the time.
