It's based on the genes that you inherit. The same is true for rolling your tongue, whether you have a widow's peak, whether you cross your arms right over left or visa versa...besides the obvious inhertitance (you have your mother's eyes and your dad's nose).

Interesting fact: polydactility (having 6 fingers or toes) is actually the dominant condition, and those of us with just 5 have the recessive condition. isn't genetics fun?

Whoa, I just discovered I am one of those people...!! I would guess it is because most people are right handed, and it is more comfortable for someone who is right-handed to clasp hands that way. If you clasp your hands together with the left thumb over the right, all of the fingers on your right hand are "in control" of the grasp (do it and try to grip and shake your other hand). It feels more secure that way as the right hand is gripping all the "main" fingers and not the thumb versus the left hand which leaves the right pinkie free and just doesn't feel as secure. Ha, learn something new every day!!

It's been said that if you clasp your hands with your left thumb above your right, your mind is mathematical and logical. If you clasp your right thumb over your left, skills such as writing or art are your strengths. I didn't know that most people clasped left over right. Personally, I clasp right over left.

well, it depends on how you clasp your hands. if your left index finger is on top of the right, your left thumb will be above your right. it's just because one hand is higher than the other. try it

Yes, but did you also know that's how you should wear side swept bangs?if your left is over your right the bangs should sweep to the right.

And it's also like, how come, when shoved, most people step forward with their right foot, I do believe. And you're considered 'goofy' if you do it the opposite way. That's also how you figure out if you ride skate/snowboards regular or goofy.
