.Your GRE scores should be outstanding.

Your GPA should be above a 3.5, and preferably much higher in your major.

Your letters of recommendation will be crucial. Make sure at least one or two are from respected scholars in psychology who are familiar with you and your work. (Hint: when asking a professor for a letter, ask if s/he "would be able to write a supportive letter" for you. This enables them to decline if they don't believe their letter would be strong enough to help you.)

Depending upon in which area of psychology you intend to focus your study, research experience could be critical. If you have participated in research, make sure your supervising professor composes one of your letters of reference.

Be sure to write an informed and literate statement of application, in which you demonstrate familiarity with current methodologies, and a focus of intended study. Include an outstanding sample of your current work (whether or not a writing sample is required).

"Getting to know the professors" is not at all a factor in graduate admissions. Visiting the program to see if it is a good fit for you is a great idea, and meeting the professors you'd be working with is always smart, but your visit will not have a determinative effect on admission. (Unless you make a completely horrible impression, in which case your visit will work against you in admissions.)

Best wishes to you.

If you have the education to get in, then I'm sure you know how to get in. If you have to ask, you probably don't have the requirements.
