On February 4, 2004 archaeologists announced that they had found a one kilometer square area of stone ruins in water off the coast of Atami, lying about 75 miles south of Tokyo. The ruins are under 60 to 150-feet of water and appear to be clustered in 20 different major sites. Carved stone steps, stone buildings, and building platforms were found. The site was initially located by Hidenori Kunitsugu, a diving instructor, back in 1975. Kunitsugu found stone steps, walls, and paving stones and gradually photographed the formations.
