Does it make sense to stockpile discontinued cologne or will it expire before I can use it all? I know it is best to keep them in a dark, dry place and they last longer if left unsprayed. Is there a chemical breakdown that occurs at some point or is there a way to preserve a fragrance with no decay?

You're right about the "keeping them in a dark place" theory. Aside from that, toilet water will keep longer than cologne ... and real perfume will keep longer than toilet water.

Aside from that, it varies from brand-to-brand. I've got some stuff that I've had for years that is just as good as it ever was ... but some stuff that's newer that went haywire. It just varies.

I admittedly have been guilty of "saving" my good stuff and trying not to use it too often ... and then I learn my lesson when it goes bad on me!

As far as I know they don't really go bad. They generally have alot of alcohol in them, so that will keep most bacteria at bay. They will however change over time. Generally the smell will start to change, and or it will loose its potency and not smell as strong.

They should last for about two or so years before they really start to change dramatically, especially if stored properly.

I have had perfumes for years and years. You just have to keep them out of direct sunlight. I normally like to keep them in original boxes for that reason. If you don't have a box put them in the medicine cabinet or you closet. Fragrances are not cheap and you should take care of them. :)
